Bluebells only appear in British woodlands once a year, usually for just two to three weeks, making them a beautiful and fleeting backdrop for family photographs. They typically bloom from late April through to early or mid May, but this can vary each year.

With changing seasons and climate patterns, exact timings aren’t always predictable. For that reason, bluebell mini session dates may need to shift slightly. If you book in, please be aware that dates could move forward or back depending on when the bluebells appear and how long they last.

Sessions usually take place at Wrington Hill, near Bristol, during the afternoon and early evening when the light works beautifully through the trees. As bluebells grow in shaded woodland, it can feel surprisingly cool, even on warmer days, so it’s worth keeping this in mind when choosing what to wear for your shoot.

What to wear for a bluebell photoshoot

The bluebells are vibrant, with rich purples and fresh greens, and aside from your family, they should be the main focus of the photos. Because of this, bold patterns and logos can be distracting and may draw attention away from the setting and your connection together.

It’s best to avoid:

  • Spots and stripes

  • Large logos or slogans

  • Black clothing for bluebell woodland shoots

  • Large or busy floral prints

Instead, try to stick to a small, coordinated colour palette using similar tones from the same colour family. Think navy, soft blues, white, light pinks, cream, tan, brown, mustard, and other muted, natural shades. You don’t need to match outfits exactly, just aim for colours that sit well together and feel cohesive.

The weather in late April and early May can be unpredictable. April showers are common, and woodland paths can become muddy, especially during busy bluebell season. You may be sitting on logs, blankets, or even the grass, so wear something you’re happy to get a little dirty.

Practical footwear is a good idea too — this definitely isn’t the time for your best shoes or high heels.

"We booked Katie for a bluebell photoshoot and the location was just perfect, we are so happy with the photos and it was a lovely family day out too!"

When visiting bluebell woods, it’s really important to be respectful of the environment. Bluebells are delicate and protected, so they shouldn’t be picked or walked on, even though it can be tempting.

All of my sessions are photographed with families standing on small pathways that run between the bluebell patches. The woodland is carefully maintained by a local trust, and no flowers are damaged during your shoot.

It can sometimes look as though people are standing directly on the bluebells in photographs, but this is simply down to angles and perspective. The paths are made from bark or gravel, and when I shoot from a low angle, they disappear from view, giving the illusion that you’re surrounded by flowers without causing any harm.

The bluebell woods themselves are quite small, and parking is roadside. Access is through a quiet village with narrow roads, so please take care when driving. Bluebell season is popular, so there will be other walkers, families, and photographers in the area, and I always work considerately around others.

I usually schedule sessions for the afternoon and early evening, when dappled sun spots through the trees are less of an issue. At this time of day, the bluebells photograph beautifully, with deeper, richer, and more even colour, giving that soft, vibrant woodland look.
